Programme

“Shall we their fond pagent see?

Lord, what fools these mortals be!”

“All this derision shall seem a dream and fruitless vision”

“I am that merry wander of the night.”

Director’s Message

One of William Shakespeare’s best-known comedies, the play revolves around the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta, a group of four young lovers in a romantic tangle, and a troupe of comically incompetent performers preparing for a show. A series of events leads both groups to a place inhabited by fairies who use magic to manipulate events.

In this production, the audience will be taken on a trip with the characters, from an uptight city full of expectations to a magical, surreal circus where hijinks occur.

In her solo directorial debut, Kelly Tynan aimed to create an over-the-top, fun, and feel-good show that will uplift and entertain the audience.

“I thought about the kinds of things I love to see when I go to the theatre and built the show around those elements. So we’re mixing in some well-known songs with gorgeous singing, we’ve got a lively and updated version of the script, we’ve got loads of absurd and physical comedy, and we’ve got performances that’ll blow you away,” she says. “The play as written is already so funny—there’s a reason it’s one of Shakespeare’s most popular—and our cast have really been able to dial up the humour. I’m so excited for audiences to experience it.”

  • Cody Bolton

    BOTTOM

Though quite introverted as a child, Cody discovered that theatre was a way to express himself and step out of his comfort zone. Now theatre is all he thinks about...not really, but he does like it a lot. Having played a compassionate, religious friar in last years production of Romeo & Juliet, Cody is excited to apply that experience to his role this year as a Donkey/overconfident, overzealous, and overly delusional wannabe actor. Turns out, this role is not that much of a stretch for him.

    FLUTE

Why start acting at the age of 40? It’s been a bit over a year since Marc made that decision and he’s been asking himself that question ever since. Some days he’s mad that he waited this long to start, and other days he wonders “what the heck have I got myself into?”. The thrill of being on stage and the camaraderie that comes from putting together a play of this magnitude is what keeps him coming back for more. Marc made his debut at the Capitol Theatre in the original community play “A la Recherche du Heart of the Arts” as Marty Caissie (MC). You may have also seen him as various ensemble characters in “The Little Mermaid”.

CREW

  • Kelly Tynan

    DIRECTOR

A Midsummer Night’s Dream has represented a series of firsts for Kelly: it was her first introduction to Shakespeare, in grade 7; it was the first Hubcity Theatre production she saw, in 2012; and now it marks her directorial debut. There’s a fitting but groaningly obvious reference to be made about what a dream it is to have been entrusted with bringing this beloved play to life this midsummer… and since this play definitely doesn’t deal in subtlety, let’s go with it. Endless thanks to the wildly talented cast and amazing production team who have made this show what it is, and so much love to her ever-supportive family (including that one kid expertly bumbling around as ‘Moonshine’). Select credits—Hubcity Theatre: Nina (Stupid F’ing Bird); co-director/Tybalt (Romeo & Juliet); AD/ensemble (Jesus Christ Superstar); Mistress Ford (Merry Wives of Windsor); AD/Hope/Jill (Almost, Maine); Celia (As You Like It). Roundhouse Productions: The 39 Steps. Hairy Tease Productions: Last Chance Romance; Drinking Alone (fall 2024).
